California Freemason - Parade

July 30, 2024 On Assignment

Earlier this year, I got the opportunity to photograph the California Freemason Prince Hall Grand Lodge and the Irvine Valley Lodge for the California Freemason Magazine. They were marching in the Orange County Black History parade and my job was to photograph the two lodges interacting and marching together in the parade, or just any good photographs I could get.

It was a very loose assignment, which made me a little nervous. A shot list, or strong idea/need, is always something nice to have, especially with a new client. Usually you're working your way through your shot list and then picking up your own fun photographs on the way. With this shoot, the editor just put full trust in me to bring back something fun and useful based on my eye. That left me a little in the dark, but I did my best to get good interaction photographs and general parade shots. Thankfully my editor Pete, one of the nicest and most trusting editors I've ever been fortunate enough to work with, was happy with my work and would give me a couple more assignments after this one.

Here's some of my favorite photographs from the assignment, rounded off by a last minute attempt at an Abbey Road photograph.
